Begegnungen mit Franz Radziwill
Das Kunstmagazin „ART“ überschrieb im Januar 1980 seine Titelgeschichte mit den Worten: „Ein famoser Kerl“. Das gut gewählte Zitat stammt von Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, der damit seinen Malerkollegen Franz Radziwill in auffallender Kürze charakterisiert. Der lebte fernab vom lauten Berlin der 20er Jahre am Strand der Nordsee unter einem hohen Himmel von 180 Grad, horchte auf Watt und Wasser, erlebte den Wechsel von Ebbe und Flut, suchte die Geheimnisse hinter dem Horizont.
Diesem seltsamen Mann begegnete ich zwischen 1956 und 1983 immer wieder. Erlebnisse, Erfahrungen, welche ich – wie ich heute weiß – nur durch ihn und mit ihm machen konnte.
In January 1980, the art magazine ART headlined its cover story with the words: “A Fabulous Fellow.” This well-chosen quote comes from Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who characterized his fellow painter Franz Radziwill with remarkable brevity. Radziwill lived far from the bustling Berlin of the 1920s, on the shores of the North Sea, beneath a vast 180-degree sky. He listened to the sounds of the tidal flats and the water, experienced the rhythm of ebb and flow, and sought the mysteries beyond the horizon.
I encountered this extraordinary man repeatedly between 1956 and 1983—experiences and insights that, as I now realize, were only possible through him and with him.
