Max Beckmann
Die Skizzenbücher
Max Beckmann (1884–1950) is the most significant German painter of the first half of the 20th century. Following the publication of his diaries and letters, as well as the catalogues raisonnés of his paintings, drawings, prints, and colored works on paper, a complete catalogue of his 54 sketchbooks is now available for the first time. Beckmann used these sketchbooks, which have remained largely unpublished to this day, throughout his entire creative period—from 1899 up until his death in 1950. The more than 1,300 pages and approximately 100 individual sheets that have since been removed and could be assigned to the individual sketchbooks are fully reproduced, documented, and commented upon. Each sketchbook is introduced with an explanation of its themes and condition. The catalogue presents new insights into Beckmann’s creative process and offers unprecedented glimpses into his visual thinking. The research and publication of the sketchbooks thus fill a significant gap in Beckmann scholarship.
